John XXIII - the pope of the council often referred to by the formula the “good pope” - had been elected to be a “transitional” pope after the long pontificate of Pius XII. Despite this, he decided to convene the Church at a council, the first and only global assembly of equals on the planet: an assembly that he let the roman curia prepare, retaining very few decisions and very few issues for himself, until the opening on 11 October 1962, when he was already aware of his illness, and when he decided to “open” the council: not only in a formal but also in a substantive sense.
